Forensic Computer Experts Know What Parents Might Not

Keeping up with everything children do these days is almost impossible for parents. Thanks to the fast-paced world we now live in, teens and pre-teens can land themselves in trouble faster than a parent can close an Internet connection. When the need arises to find out exactly what they’ve been up to while online, forensic computer experts can help. The reality is what parents don’t know can hurt their children in some cases.

Forensic computer experts are specialists in machine-based investigations. They know how to trace Internet usage, recover files, restore data and more. In the process of an investigation, they can help parents retrace their children’s steps while on the computer, which can uncover trouble or even serve to avert it. Although many forensic computer specialists work in the law enforcement arena, some branch out and assist private citizens in cases, as well. This can include helping parents unravel potentially bad situations before they become worse.

So, what should parents be worried about in regard to computer use of their teens?

Cyber stalking – This is a relatively new term that many parents might not be aware of. Cyber stalking involves the use of computers and the Internet to stalk someone in the manner a person might have done face to face in the past. This can include threats, harassing behaviors, sexual exploitation and more.

Cyber bullying – This term has been coined to describe what happens when teens use communication web sites to harass or bully others. The headlines related to this act have become more prevalent thanks to community web sites that allow for commenting and posting about other users.

Misrepresentations – A teen might think she has met another youngster from across the state or even across the country. Unfortunately, with no faces attached to names on the Internet, these “harmless” encounters can involve bad guys (or women) who misrepresent their identities to gain a child’s trust. In some cases, misrepresentation can lead to tragic outcomes – especially if the teen makes arrangements to meet the person in question.

Keeping up with Internet and computer usage has become a vital part of parenting. With stalkers, bullies and other bad guys waiting in the wings to find victims, parents cannot be too careful. When making sure a teen is safe is important, forensic computer experts can help.
